I am so thrilled to have Lara back in the studio teaching our metal clay workshops.
We’ve had a busy weekend with two full Base Metal Clay classes and two groups of enthusiastic students.

Lara is without a doubt one of the most knowledgeable artists I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. She is also one of best tutors we’ve ever had in the studio, plus she’s just an all round good egg!

Lara is one of only a few people teaching base metal clay in Australia and started teaching it here at the studio almost a decade ago.
If it’s something you’d like to learn more about, make sure you keep an eye on the website as we’ll be running regular metal clay workshops in the new year.

I was recently asked to run a ‘Mica Shift’ pol

I was recently asked to run a ‘Mica Shift’ polymer clay workshop at the studio so I thought I’d post a little video tutorial I made a few years ago instead.

Mica Shift involves aligning the mica particles within metallic/pearl polymer clay and then disturbing/misaligning them with texture sheets/stamps. The raised areas are sliced off leaving a seemingly 3D image trapped within the clay.
It is a great way to practice your blade technique/control and involves very little materials.

Condition your polymer clay.
I have used Sculpey Premo in Gold but you can use most metallic clay and some pearls also.
I have conditioned on the thickest setting of an Atlas pasta machine.

When you first roll out the metallic clay, you may notice that it is quite ‘streaky’ and shows lots of different shades of the same colour – you don’t want this. You need to align all the mica particles within the sheet of clay and you do this by conditioning your clay. Continue this until you end up with a nice shiny, even sheet of clay, all of the same colour – no (or minimal) shaded variations.

Spray the texture sheet/stamp with water and shake the excess off. This acts as a release agent. Place the texture sheet on the sheet of polymer clay and press down. You want the impression to be deep and even.

Peel off the texture sheet carefully.
Dab the water off of the clay using a dry cloth. Do this lightly so you don’t affect the pattern.

Using a sharp tissue blade (I use Thomas Scientific medical tissue blades), shave off the raised areas of the pattern. Slightly curving your blade may help you with this. Do this methodically and slowly. You only want to remove the raised area so be sure not to slice any deeper than that. Take your time.

Place some bond/copy/baking paper over the clay and burnish (rub over) the clay sheet.
When you’ve finished, the clay sheet will look like it still has a raised/3D pattern on it but the pattern is actually now within the sheet itself.....magic!

Today our students spent the day learning about all things colour and design which are so important for all creatives.

Tints, shades, hues, primaries, complimentaries, triads, analogous, RGB, CMYK, elements….they were all covered in detail, plus SO much more.

These types of workshops are so important if you are wanting to take your creative skills to the next level and I think all our students learned many skills that will enable them to do just that, in both their creative and everyday lives.
