‘Mica Gems’ Polymer Clay Workshop

In this exciting, full day workshop, Dani will show you her secrets to creating a perfect mica shift from polymer clay.
Students will also learn how to create polymer clay ‘gems’ and how to make their own silicone moulds.
Once the components have been made, Dani will show students how to quickly and effectively finish off their polymer components before assembling them into jewellery pieces (primarily earrings), if desired.

There are a many different techniques that will be covered in this workshop including (but not limited to);

– Understanding what Polymer Clay Mica Shift is and how to get the best possible effect;
– How to make moulds from original pieces;
– How to work with polymer clay – what is the best clay for this technique, why, how to store the clay plus lots more;
– How to effectively cut shapes from polymer clay;
– How to use powders etc. with polymer clay;
– All about baking/curing polymer clay to achieve maximum strength;
– How to finish polymer clay (and mica shift in particular) quickly and effectively using sanding/buffing techniques and also varnish;
– How to drill your polymer pieces to prepare them for jewellery constructing;
– How to construct your jewellery pieces (including what glues to use where applicable).
– Lots more!!

Please Note : Photos are for inspiration only. Students will be encouraged to create their own designs with assistance from Dani.
If you do not wish to create jewellery on the day, you are more than welcome to create pieces to use at home or create cabochons etc.

This workshop is different from our ‘Workshop in a Box’ Tutorial Kit with the same name. Students will learn the Mica Shift technique, mould making and finishing techniques in this workshop, which are not included in the Tutorial Kit box.

Weather permitting, this workshop will be held in our outdoor studio in  line with  our covid safe plan.
Please be prepared  for this.
If the weather is  not ideal, we will move to the inside studio, implementing additional covid safe measures.

Dani from The Whimsical Bead
Dani is the owner/creator of The Whimsical Bead and has been creating with polymer clay for 15 years and that, along with metal, is where her passion lies.
Dani loves to teach and pass on her knowledge – particularly of polymer clay – and she feels very lucky that people want to learn from her.


Skill Level:
This workshop is suitable for students of all skill levels.
Beginners are more than welcomed.


$120 plus a kit of $45 (does not include polymer clay – this can be brought from home or purchased on the day – see below, what to bring for details).

Price includes tuition, use of tools, consumables, morning and afternoon tea, tea/coffee.
Kit fee includes moulding materials, jewellery findings, micas/powders, use of sealants and glue, sanding/buffing materials, mixing cups, plus more!


All bookings require a deposit with the balance to be paid on the day.

Bookings will be made on a first come, first served basis however a deposit must be made before your booking is secure.

What to Bring:
  • Your polymer clay tool kit (optional – there will be some tools available for sharing and each student will be provided with an Atlas pasta machine). You WILL need a sharp tissue blade  which can also be purchased or borrowed on the day if required;
  • Polymer Clay in several different colours of metallic or pearls – we prefer Sculpey Premo (or purchase on the day). You will only need a few blocks at most;
  • Texture sheets (if desired, or borrow ours);
  • Cutters or templates (if desired, or borrow ours);
  • Baby Wipes;
  • Jewellery Making Pliers (if desired, or borrow ours);
  • Container for taking home your finished pieces;
  • Your lunch (or you can go into town on your lunch break);
  • Notebook/Pen/Pencil if you would like to take notes.

Extra Information Regarding COVID:


Please note, COVID safety measures will be in place on the day. These may vary from workshop to workshop according to current government regulations. You will be required to sign in (digitally via QR code preferred as per government guidelines), wear a mask indoors and hand sanitise your hands. There may be other safety measures in place on the day as directed by industry guidelines.
We ask that you remember that we are a home based business run by someone with chronic illnesses. Many of our visitors are also immune compromised. Please do not visit the studio if you are unwell in any way, have recently had a covid test and are awaiting the results or have been in contact with someone who has been unwell. If you arrive to the studio and are seen to have covid symptoms you may be asked to leave. We ask that you please respect our guidelines when entering the studio to keep yourself and everyone attending, safe.
