General Musings

There has been so many wonderful workshops here at The Whimsical Bead and so many more planned. I have always loved classes and workshops. I guess I am one of those people who have a 'thirst for knowledge'. I am also someone who loves a hearty chat and a good discussion too. These days it is easy to get caught up in the hype of the internet and social media and we can forget how great it can be to actually physically attend...

Last month, in addition to our monthly newsletter, I also sent out a short survey to my customers.  Thank you so much to those of you that participated. It has given me a bit of an idea about where to go from here, what you all like and what you'd like to see happen in the future. Thank you also to those of you who wrote me little notes however all answers were randomised during the survey process so I'm not...

This year, The Whimsical Bead is not only supporting the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal, we are also collecting funds for this worthy charity. This appeal is one that is close to my heart and something that we have always supported on a personal level, but this year I wanted to get the business involved as well.  Even though the Royal Children’s Hospital has recently moved into it’s new premises, there is still a lot of work to be done...

Those of you who receive our newsletter will know that we held a competition in February. Each person that made an order online during the month of February received an entry to win a copy of the latest The Polymer Arts magazine due to arrive in store any day now.  The winner was drawn at random this morning and notified via email.  Congratulations to  Lalaine Wall   of Victoria! Don't forget, if you would like to hear about all the latest news and receive some great...

Not to be confused with 'The Polymer Arts', 'From Polymer to Art' is a new, glossy print publication edited in the Netherlands and written in English.  It has been launched by Marjon Donker and Saskia Veltenaar of the Dutch Polymer Clay Guild who proclaim it is an 'international, arty, fashionable magazine all about polymer clay!'. I am very excited to be the first Australian stockist of this publication. The first lot of this magazine sold out in only 48hrs but I have put in another order...

I thought I would share with you a piece that I created a few weeks ago specifically for the Melbourne Bead Expo Showcase.  It is made from polymer clay using imprint mokume gane techniques. Each bead has two tubes at the back, also created from polymer clay, which is how the piece is strung together (I apologise as I completely forgot to take a photo of the back before I submitted it!). Each polymer clay bead was sanded and then buffed -...

The Polymer Arts is a brand new  magazine for professional and aspiring polymer clay artists.  This magazine is a quarterly publication Each issue will include a rotations of regular articles on the following: Material Issues - an in depth exploration of technical and creative polymer clay techniques and practices; The New and Improved - testing new products and tools or exploring new ways to use existing products; Emerging Talent - gallery of new artists' work with interviews; Mentor's Gallery - Galleries of expert...

This was the theme for the first annual Aussiepolyclayers Competition and what a competition it turned out to be. I was honoured to be asked to be a judge of this competition and when I happily accepted the position, I had no idea that the standard of entries was going to be so high. There were 21 entries, each unique in it's own right.  The creator of each piece was anonymous to the judges and was judged using a framework and scoresheet created by Christine...

metamorphosis  met·a·mor·pho·sis n. pl. met·a·mor·pho·ses  A marked change in appearance, character, condition, or function. Also called 'transformation' At the moment I feel this is an appropriate word to describe The Whimsical Bead.   In 2006, we started off as a small store selling a selection of beads and findings. 2011 nows finds us selling off the beads and specialising in polymer clay and all that surrounds this wonderful medium. The direction of the business - and myself personally - have done a complete turn-around. Goals have changed...
